The Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change (MESTECC) has launched a 2019 strategic plan, comprising 73 initiatives aiming to achieve energy sustainability and wealth creation.
According to the ministry, the 73 initiatives will require more than 150 plans of action, to be addressed by relevant parties.
The plan, named “Own It, Do It, Ace It” was launched by MESTECC Minister Yeo Bee Yin (picture) in Putrajaya yesterday.
MESTECC noted that there are 20 initiatives for the energy sector, 22 initiatives for science, technology and innovation (STI) and 20 specific plans for environment and climate change.
The plan is supported with five and six initiatives on organisational excellence and strategic issues respectively.
In the energy sector, MESTECC targets to achieve a 20% renewable energy (RE) capacity mix by 2025. It is equivalant to some 4GW RE injection into the country’s grid in the next seven years.
Yeo had earlier expressed optimism on achieving the target, underpinned by the implementation of Large-Scale Solar Programme 3, non-solar RE projects, enhanced net energy metering and solar leasing.
MESTECC targets the energy sector to achieve 8% savings from energy efficiency in 2025, enhance the governance of Malaysia Electricity Supply Industry and ensure sustainability of Sabah Electricity Supply Industry (SESI).
One of the initiatives for SESI is to plan for microgrid frameworks and project monitoring for Sabah rural electrification.
Under the STI, the ministry eyes to consolidate the ecosystem by developing commercialisation centres and incubator spaces for technopreneurs.
MESTECC also aims to improve delivery in the green economy and identify strategic emerging technologies where the country could be pioneer.
