Some 100 underprivileged students and port workers’ children are better prepared for the new schooling year, thanks to the “Jom ke Sekolah 2019” programme by Johor Port Bhd.
They received financial aid and brand-new school supplies, including school bags, stationery sets and pencil cases.
The corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative by Johor Port, a member of the MMC Corp Bhd, aims to lighten the financial burden of families with low household income.
Some of the recipients were from SK Pasir Puteh, Pasir Gudang, and Persatuan Kebajikan Al-Zaraffee Negeri Johor, a welfare association for underprivileged children in Johor.
Johor Port CEO Shahrull Allam Shah Abdul Halim said the initiative is also the company’s way of instilling the importance of education in the children as well as their parents.
“The essential school items are to help the students to perform well. We hope the students and their parents will take education seriously and pursue it diligently for a brighter future,” he said in a statement.
The handover ceremony in Pasir Gudang on Dec 27 was officiated by Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim.
In the same statement, Hassan said he is encouraged by the corporation’s involvement in improving the wellbeing of the community.
The “Jom ke Sekolah 2019” programme is part of Johor Port’s commitment to enhance the social and economic wellbeing of the communities under its CSR’s education pillar.
Johor Port intends to continue its community development initiative to build a better future for the communities within its operating area in Johor, especially in Pasir Gudang, according to the statement.
