The government is looking at introducing a reward concept for good drivers starting next year to raise the road and driving safety awareness in the country.

“Some of the concepts to reward good behaviour on roads will be introduced next year. I think Malaysians will like the idea. You behave (on roads), then you are rewarded,” Transport Minister Anthony Loke said at the 9th Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show (KLIMS) 2018 in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Loke said the government is open to work with any party that will help increase the awareness of road safety and improve Malaysians’ driving attitude.

The reward programme concept, according to Loke, will allow drivers to claim rebates on fuel or toll fees, based on their behaviour on the roads.

The minister singled out one organisation that is currently developing an application to monitor and evaluate the behaviour of drivers.

Loke said the digital database is set to be further synced between stakeholders such as enforcement agencies and insurance companies in tackling summons payment evaders.

Meanwhile, he also said the government will announce a new policy on the tinted glass for vehicles very soon, and consideration on the proposal of using electronic number plates is also in the pipeline.

The mobility of Malaysians is projected to increase to more than three times from 40 million daily trips in 2010 to 131 million daily trips in 2030.

The number of vehicles is expected to increase 1.4 times to 31 million in 2030.

The KLIMS 2018, which started yesterday, will run until Dec 2, 2018, at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre.

Malaysian Automotive Association president Datuk Aishah Ahmad, who is also the chairperson of the KLIMS 2018 said the motor show targets at least 350,000 visitors for this edition.

The 2018 motor show features 74 participating companies of major carmakers and brands in the country.

There are more than 10 new car launches and previews during the 10-day event.
