31 victims remain in flood relief centre in Penang

A total of 31 flood victims in Teluk Kumbar still remain at a relief centre in SK Teluk Kumbar, near here.

Penang Welfare, Community and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said the victims from 10 families had been transferred to the relief centre since 8.30 pm last night.

“The victims including three babies are still at the flood relief centre today, and if the weather permits, they will probably go home by this afternoon.

“A total of 12 Social Welfare Department officers have been working to assist them at the relief centre since yesterday,” he said, adding that another flood relief centre in Surau Haji Hashim, Bukit Kecil, Balik Pulau near here was closed at 10 pm yesterday after floods receded and all 33 victims from nine families were sent home.

Continous rain from 8.30 am to 4 pm yesterday had caused flash floods in several places around Penang including Bayan Lepas, Teluk Kumbar, Sungai Ara, Teluk Bahang and Sungai Pinang in Balik Pulau.

Meanwhile, a flood victim in Teluk Kumbar, Mohd Zakaria Awang, 52, said the flood this time was worse than the one last month as the water-level at his home had risen up to 1m.

“The flood water began entering my house at 3 pm after overflowing from the nearby river,” said the fisherman.

Another flood victim in Bayan Lepas, Siti Husna Abdul Rahim, 42, said residents did not rule out the possibility that some of the development projects in the area had been causing flash floods in the area over the past few months.

“But the flood this time is worse, homes situated in lower areas have been inundated in water and some of their vehicles are also damaged. This is not the first time this has happened, it has occurred several times in the last five months,” she said. – BERNAMA
