THE SUVs have certainly taken the automotive world by storm. Broadly speaking, one in every three cars sold today is SUV, and every automaker, it seems, wants a slice of the booming market.

From mass-produced brands to the premiums as well as luxury motor cars, SUV seems to be the way to go.

More and more consumers are buying SUVs for the size and rugged look of the vehicles.

In a recent report by The Malaysian Reserve, the SUV segment accounted for as much as almost 30% of the total vehicle sales for premium brands in Malaysia last year.

In fact, more than 10 new SUVs or crossovers have so far been launched for the local market this year alone.

UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd recently launched the all-new Toyota Rush, while Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia Sdn Bhd unveiled the limited edition Mitsubishi Outlander Sports Edition earlier this month.

Towards the year-end, the hype is very much on the official arrival of Proton Holdings Bhd’s first ever SUV — the X70.

Not to be left out, premium players have also shown more keenness to push their SUV models.

BMW Group Malaysia launched its X2 and X3 within a month-period earlier this year, while Volvo Car Malaysia Sdn Bhd introduced the XC60 and XC40 for the Malaysian consumers.

In the higher range and luxury space, Jaguar Land Rover Malaysia added F-Pace into the market.

Naza Italia Sdn Bhd brought in the 2019 Levante S, while Sime Darby Auto Performance Sdn Bhd debuted the E3 Porsche Cayenne.

In March, Automobili Lamborghini SpA introduced the world’s first super SUV in Malaysia — the Urus.

Now, Bentley Motors Ltd sets to join the ring with the new Bentayga V8.

Sleekness of Bentley in SUV Mode
Bentley Kuala Lumpur, operated by Wearnes Quest Sdn Bhd, launched the Bentayga V8 for the Malaysian buyers in mid-October.

The new model embodies the DNA of a Bentley — smooth, silky and sleek — with the performance of an SUV.

The award-winning Bentley model is powered by its new-generation 4.0-litre V8 engine which can deliver 550 PS (pferdestärke) and 770Nm.

The vehicle accelerates from zero to 100kph in 4.5 seconds, zero to 160kph in 9.8 seconds and boasting a top speed of 290kph.

Such power comes with the largest and most powerful braking system ever fitted to a Bentley, and the largest front brake system available on any production car.

For the first time, optional carbon ceramic brakes are offered on the Bentayga.

The SUV is also equipped with the world’s first electric active roll control technology that utilises a 48V system.

The system instantly counteracts lateral rolling forces when cornering and ensures a maximum tyre contact to deliver class-leading cabin stability, ride comfort and exceptional handling.

The SUV model has the widest range of on- and off-road drive settings of any vehicle via Bentley’s drive dynamics mode and optional all terrain specification.

With a simple turn of a dial, drivers can select between eight modes — four on- and four off-road — for any surface or road condition either snow and grass; dirt and gravel; mud and trail, or sand dunes.

The Bentayga V8 has four modes of air suspension including High 2, High 1, Normal and Low.

Customers can also lower the rear suspension via a switch in the boot, to ease loading and trailer hitching.

“The Bentayga V8 is the ultimate luxury SUV that delivers an uncompromising Bentley experience on- and off-road,” Wearnes Quest MD Jerry Lee said in a statement.

The SUV is also equipped with hill descent control that regulates the vehicle’s speed automatically on steep declines, allowing the driver to concentrate fully on steering and obstacles ahead.

It can be pre-set at speeds between 2kph and 30kph (going in either direction) and works on gradients greater than 5%.

Muscular Exterior, Glossy Interior
Bentayga V8 exudes muscular, sculptural lines, balanced athleticism with a commanding presence on the road. The front is furnished with black and chrome grille and complemented by Bentley “twin-quad” exhaust tailpipes at the rear.

Meanwhile, the four round LED headlamps to the matrix grille, the overt powerline, large rear haunches and raised ride height reflects the off-road ability of the luxury SUV.

The wheels come with a choice of 11 wheel designs, including an all-new 22-inch five-spoke wheel with black painted and polished finish.

Buyers can choose either the Bentayga’s 4-, 5-, or 7-seat configuration, for ultimate versatility and individuality

The Bentayga V8 continues the Bentley tradition of intricate detailing and fine, handcrafted precision on the interior.

Customers can specify hand cross-stitching that highlights the styling lines of the seats and door panels.

Additionally, buyers can pick either Bentayga’s four-, five-, or seven-seat configuration, for ultimate versatility and individuality.

For the first time, Bentley has offered a high-gloss carbon-fibre finish for its car model to woo those who seek a contemporary and technical feel.

The British marque has traditionally offered a matt carbon-fibre surface to replace the veneer on panels including the fascia, centre console and door waist rails.

Other new interior options are wood and hide steering wheel; and rich red leather — the Cricket Ball.

The new three-spoke, wood and hide trimmed wheel is available in seven different veneer finishes which uses a solid wood base to maintain the integrity and authenticity of the interior.

Meanwhile, the Cricket Ball leather that makes its debut in the Bentayga V8, is inspired by the traditional and instantly appealing deep chestnut hue of a new cricket ball.

It fits into the inspiring range of 15 interior colours and five-colour splits offered by Bentley.

Entertainment at Its Best
The infotainment system, on the other hand, is a cutting-edge technology.

The SUV is installed with an eight inch touchscreen with navigation technology, a 60GB hard drive with a choice of up to 30 languages.

The rear seats are fitted with Bentley Entertainment Tablet — a removable 10.2-inch Android device with 4G, WiFi and Bluetooth for effortless, high-speed onboard connectivity.

Customers can choose between three different sound systems for the Bentayga V8 — Bentley Standard Audio, Bentley Signature Audio and Naim for Bentley Premium Audio.

The latter is the most powerful system in the segment, with 1,950 watts, a network of 18 speakers and super-tweeters for an unrivalled recreation of the highest audio frequencies.

Overall, the Bentayga V8 provides an exhilarating and engaging driving experience both on and off the road.

Drivers and passengers alike get the best of both worlds from the SUV, an unmistakably a Bentley.

Priced from RM1.58 million after duties (before options), the Bentayga V8 is now available for viewing at Bentley Kuala Lumpur.
