Shopee records biggest gain in web visits in 3Q18


Singapore-based e-commerce platform Shopee is the top gainer in terms of monthly web visits during the third quarter of 2018 (3Q18) compared to the previous quarter.

Metasearch platform iPrice Group’s Map of E-commerce data for 3Q18 showed that Shopee posted a 28% growth in monthly web visits, followed by 11street with 21%.

Trailing behind the two brands were Lazada and Zalora with a 16% decrease each, while Lelong recorded a 2% drop in monthly web visits.

However, Lazada remains the top visited website with 23.38 million visitors, followed by Shopee (15.79 million), 11street (7.83 million), Lelong (5.1 million) and Zalora (1.52 million).

iPrice said the key web traffic drivers in the quarter were the MyCyberSale and 9.9 sales shopping campaigns, which were held from Sept 3-7 and Sept 9 respectively.

It added that Lazada and Shopee were highly active during the 9.9 sales period.

“Both e-commerce merchants launched the sales period in an extravagant manner, promoted additional consumer protection features, improved delivery times and introduced attractive promotions.

“The two e-commerce leaders also launched the sales campaign across South-East Asia and experienced a boost in web visits on Sept 9 and the days leading to it,” iPrice noted in a statement yesterday.

Shopee also leads the mobile application rankings on both iOS and Android, followed by Lazada.

According to experts, mobile app rankings are determined by factors such as the title of the app; number of downloads; user rating and reviews; and others.

iPrice said both players had introduced mobile-specific deals to increase the usage of their respective mobile shopping apps.

Meanwhile, Lelong emerged as the most visited Malaysian-based e-commerce merchant with 5.1 million visitors, followed by GoShop (836,900), Hermo (699,900), FashionValet (352,100) and CJ WOW SHOP (338,700).

The oldest player in the list, Lelong — which was established since the late 1990s — is the only e-commerce merchant to exceed more than five million monthly web visits during the quarter.

iPrice said based on 2017 data, e-commerce merchants are expected to experience a 30% increase in monthly web visits in the final quarter of the year.

“Also, 4Q18 will be the most important period for e-commerce players in Malaysia since almost all major online sales campaigns take place near the end of the year.

“Among the most important sales periods are the 10.10 sales, 11.11 sales (also known as Singles’ Day), 12.12 sales and year-end sales.

“From a long-term perspective, the Budget 2019 announcement on Nov 2 is expected to play a vital role in the development of the digital sector.

“According to analysts, among the biggest initiatives to be announced is the digital tax, which aims to level the playing field for all businesses in the digital economy,” iPrice added.
