BMW Malaysia sales up 20%

The premium carmaker is on the right trajectory to achieve another double-digit annual growth locally

BMW Group Malaysia has sold 20% more vehicles to date with 9,500 deliveries for its BMW, MINI and Motorrad models on greater interests in electric and hybrid cars.

MD and CEO Harald Hoelzl said the sales performance was attributed to its electrified BMW and MINI vehicles, which accounted for 56% of the total 9,500 units.

“Malaysia is an extremely interesting market. Fifty-six percent of our total share in sales is plug-in hybrids. It (the market) is very important for us and we are ready to bring more plug-in hybrids to the market,” he said after unveiling the BMW i8 Roadster at the Conference of the Electric Power Supply Industry (CEPSI) 2018 in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Globally, BMW AG has seen its electrified-vehicle segment jumped 43.3% year-on-year (YoY) to over 82,000 units in the first eight months of this year.

The premium German carmaker is on track to achieve its target of 140,000 electrified vehicles in 2018, surpassing 100,000 units that was recorded last year.

On the local front, BMW Malaysia, which is the e-mobility partner of CEPSI 2018, is on the right trajectory to achieve another double digit annual growth, driven by its four locally assembled electrified models, which include the 3-, 5- and 7-Series sedan hybrids, as well as the SUV X5 hybrid.

Last year, the company sold 10,618 cars, an increase of 18% YoY from 9,000 vehicles it delivered in 2016.

Hoelzl said the locally assembled plug-in hybrids employ the same hybrid system as the i8 Roadster model.

Dubbed as the “Icon of a New Era”, the i8 Roadster comes with a RM1.5 million tag on the road (without insurance).

Its internal combustion engine extracts maximum output of 170kW/231hp with a peak torque of 320Nm.

The combined system output is produced by an electric motor and engine at 275kW/374hp, enabling an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h.

Overall, the i8 Roadster can accelerate from zero to 100km/h in 4.6 seconds.

Additionally, it is equipped with the BMW eDrive technology that enables the car to go fully electric up to 53km.

The i8 Roadster is the second i model introduced by BMW Malaysia this year after the recent launch of the RM1.4 million BMW i8 Coupé in mid-August.

The model is available at BMW i dealerships beginning today.
