A different 2018 Malaysia Day celebration – Dr Mahathir

KOTA KINABALU — The Malaysia Day celebration this year is different because this is the first time it is celebrated by a new federal government led by a different coalition of political parties, says Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

He said the results of the 14th general election (GE14) saw Pakatan Harapan (PH) replacing Barisan Nasional (BN) known as Alliance earlier which ruled the Federation of Malaya and later Malaysia since independence for 61 years.

“The change is not something minor. This is because before GE14, political analysts and observers generally said it was difficult to topple BN, in fact some even said…it was impossible to topple a government that had been in power for 61 years.

“But thank God, Pakatan Harapan succeeded in bringing down BN even though it was unexpected. The success is the wish of the people. It is a kind of people’s power.

“Whoever ignore the people will face the same fate (toppled by the people’s power). Therefore Pakatan Harapan and Parti Warisan Sabah should understand this fact,” he said when speaking at the Malaysia Day celebration here tonight.

Dr Mahathir said the change had brought about the use of the slogan ‘New Malaysia’ and it is the hopes of the people and administers to reject the ways of the previous government in practising kleptocracy, reject democracy as well as not guided by the rule of law.

“Among the main issue is that we want to change the culture of corruption which had infiltrated the leaders of UMNO and BN and the government machinery under them.

“The belief that cash is king is not true. Reject this slogan and return to Bersih, Cekap dan Amanah (Clean, Efficient and Trustworthy),” he said.
