No mass monitoring on social media, emails – MCMC

The agency had been plagued with questions over several data breaches — among which is one considered the largest in the country’s history, where personal details of about 46.2 million mobile users in the country were put on sale (Pic: TMRpic)

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) today refuted claims that it carried out mass monitoring of any social media or emails.

MCMC acting chairman Datuk Dr Mohd Ali Mohamad Nor said any investigations into social media postings and enforcement action were carried out as a result of complaints or requests by law enforcement agencies.

“MCMC does not carry out mass monitoring of any social media or emails.

“The government upholds the right to freedom of speech and privacy within the confines of the law and MCMC will assist if there is a breach of the law,” he said in a statement here today.
