Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd’s (MAHB) international and domestic network of airports in July saw the highest number of passenger traffic ever recorded in a single month.

MAHB said the traffic even surpassed last December’s, which has always been the month that brings in the highest number of passengers.

“MAHB network of airports’ 4.2% growth can be considered subdued partly because of the high base traffic during the Hari Raya holiday season which began at the end of June and stretched to early July 2017,” it said in a statement last week.

In July 2018, MAHB’s network of airports which includes Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen International Airport (SGIA), recorded a traffic increase of 4.2% or 11.9 million passengers compared to the previous year.

MAHB said SGIA performed outstandingly. The airport, it said, saw a 9.8% rise in passenger movement or 3.3 million passengers compared to the same period last year.

Airports in Malaysia registered an increase of 2.2% year- on-year (YoY) growth or 8.6 million passengers in the same month compared to 2017.

The international sector recorded a 5.1% growth or 4.6 million passengers, while the domestic sector’s numbers declined 1% with four million passengers.

Asean destinations passenger movements rose 4.7% or 2.2 million passengers, whereas non-Asean passenger movements recorded a growth of 5.4% with 2.3 million passengers.

Overall aircraft passenger movements for July 2017 rose 5.4% with 2.3 million passengers, while overall aircraft movements dropped 1.4% over.

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) also recorded a 2.9% growth with 5.3 million passenger movements.

A total of 1.8 million passengers bound for Asean destinations were recorded while for non-Asean destinations saw two million passengers.

KLIA’s domestic sector rose 0.8% with 1.4 million passengers. International aircraft movements at KLIA also rose marginally while domestic aircraft movements registered a 2.7% growth.

KLIA main terminal, however, saw a decline in passenger movements of 0.4% or 28.2 million passengers.

Meanwhile, KLIA 2’s passenger movements also saw an increase of 11.8% with 31.8 million passengers.

Passenger movements at all 38 Malaysian airports other than KLIA also rose 1.1% with 3.3 million passengers this July compared to July 2017.

Overall, MAHB’s international traffic rose 14.7%, while its domestic traffic rose 7.4%.
