Dive expo generates RM7.5m sales

Close to RM7.5 million sales were generated at the three-day Malaysia International Dive Expo ( MIDE) 2018 held in Kuala Lumpur in May.

The event attracted 10,536 visitors from 54 countries, according to a statement from the organiser. A total of 1,034 exhibitors from 16 countries were at the expo to share their products, services and expertise with divers and water lovers.

The event was officiated by Ministry of Tourism and Culture deputy secretary general Datuk Yean Yoke Heng.

Among others, the event saw the Malaysia Scuba Diving Association launching its new website allowing divers to access up-to-date information on all dive-related matters in and around Malaysia.

Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism took home the best design award, while the Philippines’ Department of Tourism won the creative design award.

In the business-to-business session, the Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board organised Malaysia Dive Tourism Mart, which saw 11 buyers from Asean and South Pacific countries meet with local distributors and suppliers.

One of the highlights of the expo was the Lens Beyond Ocean Underwater Photography competition which attracted participants from 17 countries. Bausani Paolo from Italy grabbed the main prize of a five-night stay at a hotel in the Philippines.

The competition was judged by renowned underwater photographers, including marine biologist Dr Alexander Mustard from the UK, Women Diver’s Hall of Fame Amanda Cotton from the US and Nurul Yazid from Malaysia.

The Ocean Rescue Forum discussed sustainable practices and educated listeners on what they can do to participate in the ongoing rescue mission of the oceans and marine life.

At the Freediving Forum, enthusiasts heard from experts Dr Azhar Hussin, along with freediving national record holders Azua Shafii, Jonathan Chong, Azam Hamid and Paul Sack.

Female divers of the Dive Divas Fan Club were treated to exclusive presentations by underwater welder Nur Izzati Athirah and underwater videographer Irwan Ismail.
