Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook (picture) is expected to meet car manufacturers today to find solutions for the “deadly Takata airbags” issue.
Loke said more than 70,000 cars have not changed their airbags and Honda is not the only manufacturer that is caught up in the case.
Apart from Honda, he said other car manufacturers include Toyota, Nissan, BMW, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Mazda and Lexus.
“After the meeting, we will inform you the approach we will take to get more people to change their airbags as soon as possible because the numbers of affected cars being reported are huge.
“My concern is many people are not aware of their cars being recalled,” Loke told reporters at a press conference in Putrajaya yesterday.
Apart from Honda, there are other brands with very low rate of airbags replacement — with some as low as 30%.
“I want to ask the car manufacturers on the steps they have taken; how we can speed the process up; and how to notify the car owners efficiently that their cars are being recalled,” Loke said.
Loke recently said owners who fail to replace their recalled faulty Takata airbags will not be able to renew their road tax, until a replacement has been made.
Meanwhile, Loke said the ministry is expected to achieve more than RM22 million of sales for the bidding of limited edition “Malaysia” vehicle registration number series.
The target was based on the RM22.48 million revenue posted from the sale of the “V” vehicle registration number series.
The bidding for the “Malaysia” series will be open for two weeks from July 2-16, 2018, and the result will be announced on Aug 23, 2018.
