AMD aims higher revenue, bigger presence

Computer processor developer Advanced Micro Devices Malaysia (AMD) expects growth of 300% in revenue as the company gears up for a more aggressive approach in 2018.

“We are going to be more aggressive in the market this year as we will be focusing on our central processing unit (CPU) segment to drive the business,” AMD channel sales director for Asean Ryan Sim said last Friday.

He added that in the first quarter of 2018 (1Q18), the group has grown about 120% year-on-year.

“This growth is quite a phenomenon and it has set us on the right path to achieve our target growth of 300% by the end of this year.

“At the same time, the growth can be contributed mainly from the sales of our CPU products, as we had launched the first generation of Ryzen processor last year,” he added.

Sim, however, declined to divulge the figures for the company’s revenue.

AMD has recently launched its second generation of Ryzen processor, which Sim believes would be one of the key drivers to the company’s growth this year.

He added that based on International Data Corp’s reports, AMD’s market share in Malaysia was about 12% as of 1Q18.

“By the end of this year, we hope to increase our market share to 20%,” he said.

On what sets AMD apart from its competitors, Sim said the semiconductor company is the only company in the world that has both graphics chipset and CPU development capabilities.

“We are the only company to have both CPU and graphics processing unit (GPU) intellectual properties and product capabilities. And just by looking at our competitors, they focus on developing either CPU or GPU.

“With that said, this is our core strength and also what sets us apart from the rest,” he said.

He added that 2018 would be another exciting year following 30 product launches last year.

“We will be launching more products this year from both CPU and GPU chipsets, as well as expanding our sales and marketing here in Malaysia.

“It is important that we continue to gain more coverage here as it is key to our growth. And with that said, we are looking to expand our presence within the next 12 months,” he said.
