BN may include universal child care as part of election manifesto

Barisan Nasional (BN) may include universal child care as part of its manifesto in the upcoming general election to improve the living condition of those who had fallen through the cracks, as reported in a recent United Nations Children’s Fund study.

BN Backbenchers Club chairman Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad (picture) said while the findings were disturbing, Malaysians at large had to acknowledge it and move forward with plans to improve the situation.

“We are not being defensive and I think it is an excellent study because it just shows people about those who have fallen through the cracks, and we have to improve our delivery, that’s important,” he told a press conference at the Parliament building in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Shahrir, who is also Johor Baru MP, said he had made the proposal to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Razak, who is also BN chairman, when they met earlier yesterday.

Shahrir added that BN would take the opportunity to raise the issue, while debating the royal address by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V.
