THE Fire and Rescue Department is expected to have a full report ready in a week on the re at the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) building in Jalan Gasing.
Petaling Jaya Fire and Rescue Station chief Mohd Hafiz Mat Dali said that period of time was necessary to identify the cause of the fire and declare the premises safe for use.
“We will also evaluate the damage suffered,” he said to Bernama at the location.
Mohd Hafiz said the forensics team had completed the task of taking samples from the site of the re. At about 5pm, Bernama saw EPF staff gathered at the premises to retrieve personal belongings left in the building with the help of the Fire and Rescue personnel.
A total of 527 staff were in the six-storey building when the re struck, but none of them were injured.
The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department was alerted to the re at 11.52am and firefighters arrived by 11.58am and brought the blaze under control in 30 minutes.
The EPF building was built in 1960. Based on news records, the building had served as the EPF headquarters for 35 years, from 1960 to 1995.
The building is located near the Federal Highway and serves as a landmark for Klang Valley residents to determine the boundary between Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. — Bernama
