Axiata Group Bhd has appointed Khazanah Nasional Bhd deputy MD Tengku Datuk Seri Azmil Zahruddin Raja Abdul Aziz (picture) as the newest addition to its board of directors.
Tengku Azmil Zahruddin will represent the national strategic investment fund by taking on the role as non-independent, non-ED of the Axiata group effective from Jan 12, 2018.
He will be replacing Khazanah nominee Kenneth Shen, who has served the board of Axiata since 2011.
Axiata chairman Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar in a filed statement to Bursa Malaysia last Friday welcomed Tengku Azmil Zahruddin as the newest member of the board, noting that “his deep experience across various industries, in particular technology and innovation, will bring new and relevant perspectives to the board.
“The board would like to thank Shen at the same time for his many invaluable contributions to the Axiata board over the past six years, and we are also very pleased that Shen will remain in the Axiata group as a board member of edotco Group Sdn Bhd, as well as PT XL Axiata Tbk,” he said.
Tengku Azmil Zahruddin joined Khazanah in 2011 as ED of investments, where he managed the country’s sovereign wealth fund’s investments in a number of areas, including innovation and technology.
He also held oversight for both its offices in San Francisco as wel l as Khazanah’s Northern Corridor in Penang.
Axiata president and group CEO Tan Sri Jamaludin Ibrahim said the appointment was welcome amid the telecommunications group’s ongoing period of transformation in the industry.
“Tengku Azmil Zahruddin brings with him a breath of knowledge from competitive industries that have seen similar revolutionary changes,” he said.
“On behalf of the management of Axiata, I would also like to express our gratitude to Shen, a dedicated long-serving member of the board, who has been instrumental to the success of the group,” Jamaludin added.
“I have personally enjoyed working with him and I am pleased that he has agreed to remain on the board of some of our operating companies.”
Tengku Azmil Zahruddin held the post of MD and CEO of Malaysia Airlines Bhd prior to joining Khazanah. He also served as the national airline’s non-executive board director in August 2004, and as ED and CFO in August 2005. Tengku Azmil Zahruddin also worked with PricewaterhouseCoopers in the professional services firm’s London and Hong Kong offices, where he specialised in financial services in the audit and business advisory services division.
