MALAYSIA Airports Holdings Bhd’s (MAHB) passenger movement at its Malaysia airports grew 8.5% year-on-year (YoY) to a record of 96.5 million passengers in 2017, surpassing the 90 million mark for the first time.
Total passenger movement for MAHB’s network of airports in Malaysia and Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport in Turkey increased by 7.8% YoY to 127.9 million passengers for the year, the airport operator noted in an exchange filing yesterday.
International passenger market share exceeded 50% in 2017, as this market grew 14.1% YoY to 49.3 million passengers. Domestic passenger movement grew 3.2% YoY in 2017.
The Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Kota Kinabalu International Airport were among the airports to register a double-digit growth in passenger movement.
KLIA passenger movement grew by 11.2% YoY to 58.5 million passengers. Other airports that registered positive growth were Penang, Kuching, Langkawi, Kota Baru, Kota Kinabalu, Melaka, Tawau and Bintulu.
Overall average load factor for 2017 was 76%, the highest since 2012, MAHB noted.
Aircraft movement grew by 2.6% YoY where international movement grew 7.7% YoY, while domestic movement declined by 0.3%.
MAHB added that domestic passenger traffic in 2018 is expected to grow by 6.3% YoY, with international and domestic passenger traffic growing at 8.3% and 4.2% YoY respectively.
