The force is still strong in Malaysia as “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” raked in an impressive RM12.1 million at the box office last Christmas eve, making it the strongest performer at the local cinema at the end of 2017.

The film, one of the most anticipated among Malaysian cinema-goers, particularly Star Wars die-hard fans, collected a cool RM7.2 million during its opening weekend.

The film continued the run by collecting RM2.35 million during its second week at the local cinemas.

In second position during the same opening weekend as “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” was another Disney-distributed film “Coco”, which collected RM364,406, followed by a family-themed flick “Wonder”, which managed to score RM135,646, according to Box Office Mojo.

Globally, “The Last Jedi” has so far crossed the US$1 billion (RM4.02 billion) mark, coming in third after “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Fate of the Furious” on the 2017 worldwide grosses list.

According to Cinema Online, the sci-fi movie is still running strongly in 132 local cinemas, only to compete with new releases such as “Jumanji: Welcome to The Jungle”, “Pitch Perfect 3” and “The Greatest Showman”, among others.

Three weeks into its screening, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” has been ranked fifth by cinema operator Golden Screen Cinema (GSC), topping “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle”.

The 40-year legacy of Star Wars was revived after the Walt Disney Co acquired Lucasfilm Ltd from filmmaker George Lucas for US$4 billion in 2012.

After a 10-year hiatus, the studio released the seventh episode, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, as well as “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”, which was billed as a standalone story.

“The Last Jedi” has caused a rift between the critics and audiences, as scores by aggregator Rotten Tomatoes showed a divisive 91% “fresh” by the critics, versus 50% audiences who liked the movie.

Regardless, the following episode of the sequel trilogy is expected to debut on Dec 20, 2019, while a Han Solo standalone movie, “Solo: A Star Wars Story” will be released on May 25 this year.

Until then, may the Force be with the all the Star Wars fan-boys awaiting the next plot of the intergalactic saga.
