Floods worsen in Kelantan, Terengganu, over 3,000 evacuated

The floods which have hit the east coast states of Kelantan and Terengganu worsened this afternoon, sending more people to relief centres as heavy rain continued to pour in several areas and the levels of some rivers breached the danger point.

By 1 pm, 3,632 had been moved out of their homes to 80 relief centres in the two states as the floods struck seven districts in Kelantan and six in Terengganu.

Perlis in the west coast was also affected by floods last night, and 46 families from two villages, namely Kampung Padang Malau and Kampung Padang Malau Dalam in Padang Besar were moved to relief centres.

In KELANTAN, the floods forced 2,459 people out of their homes by 1 pm compared to 1,729 in the morning.

The evacuees were being accommodated at 45 relief centres in the districts of Kota Bharu, Pasir Mas, Tanah Merah, Pasir Puteh, Kuala Krai, Machang and Bachok.

The flood information portal of the Kelantan Drainage and Irrigation Department reported that the level of the Golok River in Rantau Panjang and Pasir Mas had breached the danger point of nine metres to register 10.30 metres this afternoon, up from 10.06 metres in the morning.

According to Welfare Department’s inforbanjir application, Kota Bahru was still having the highest number of victims with 807 people from 193 families placed at five PPS while in Pasir Mas 637 victims from 205 families evacuated to 15 PPS.

In Pasir Puteh, 297 victims from 96 families were sheltered in four PPS while 276 victims  from 66 families were housed at 10 PPS in Tanah Merah. Apart from that, 227 victims from 66 families were housed at four PPS in Machang, 127 victims from 29 families in six PPS in Kuala Krai and 88 victims from 23 families were evacuated to a PPS in Bachok.

According to Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS) portal, infobanjir.water.gov.my, Sungai Golok in Rantau Panjang, Pasir Mas had breached its danger level of 9.0 metres and its water level was rising to 10.30 metres at noon compared to 10.06  metres at 7am.   

In TERENGGANU, the number of evacuees rose from 936 in the morning to 1,173 at 1 pm.

They are being housed at 35 relief centres in the districts of Setiu, Hulu Terengganu, Besut, Dungun, Marang and Kuala Nerus.

The Setiu district has had a drastic increase in the number of evacuees to 339 (74 families), and they were being housed at six relief centres, it said.

Hulu Terengganu recorded 497 evacuees (193 families) at 18 relief centres and Besut, 116 evacuees (31 families) at two centres.

Dungun registered 160 evacuees (42 families) at five relief centres, Marang, 51 evacuees (12 families) at three centres and Kuala Nerus, 10 evacuees (two families) at one centre.

Several areas in the state were experiencing heavy rain as at 1 pm, according to the secretariat.
