THE government has allocated a total of RM450 million for the Election Commission (EC) to conduct the country’s 14th General Election (GE14).
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said the commission could also request for additional funds from the Finance Ministry (MoF) should the need arises.
She said in a written parliamentary reply yesterday that the EC was given RM82 million last year to undertake early preparations for the polls.
She was responding to Sarikei MP Wong Ling Biu, who asked the government to state the specific funds allocated for the EC for the upcoming GE14, and how much was used in GE13 which was held in 2013.
“The funding allocated to execute GE13 was RM460 million.
The funding given to the EC for GE14 this year is RM320 million. Additionally, the EC was already given RM82 million in 2017 for early preparations,” Azalina said.
She said that the EC had also estimated total cost of over RM450 million to conduct GE14, which is also the amount requested from MoF.
Last week, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in a Bernama report stated that GE14 will be held next year, putting to rest heightened speculation that the national polls might be called at the year-end.
According to Ahmad Zahid, the polls have to be called in the next six months.
In addition, he added that the ruling coalition’s machineries should be ready to face election any time from next year.
