AirAsia X’s passengers rise 23% in 3Q17

AIRASIA X Bhd said its passenger numbers surged 23% year-on-year (YoY) to 1.5 million for the third quarter of 2017 (3Q17).

The airline said its operating performance in the period surpassed its available seat per kilometres capacity growth of 21% YoY.

AirAsia X said its passengers growth for the quarter was due to strong local demand for flights at the end of August, when the National Day long weekend coincided with the school holidays and Hari Raya in Malaysia.

The company said promotions also helped fill seats in 3Q17 despite the 3Q being traditionally one of the leanest quarters. It said passenger load factor (PLF) improved to 79%, up one percentage point YoY.

During the quarter under review, AirAsia X Malaysia (AAX Malaysia) added Taipei to its destinations in line with the company’s strategy to strengthen its North Asia market.

The fleet size remained at 22 A330s as no new aircraft was added into AAX Malaysia in 3Q17.

As for its associates, AirAsia X Thailand (AAX Thailand) had been able to record a robust PLF of 86%, up one percentage point compared to 85% a year ago.

During the quarter under review, AAX Thailand carried 359,941 passengers, up 3.2% YoY.

There was no new route added into AAX Thailand’s network in 3Q17, as management remains concentrated on fine-tuning AAX Thailand’s forward strategy following the successful recertification of its Air Operator Certificate back in June.

Meanwhile, the relaunch of AirAsia X Indonesia’s (AAX Indonesia) A330s service in 2Q17, namely Denpasar-Mumbai and Denpasar-Narita, had contributed to growth, recording a PLF of 76%, up 12 percentage points from 64% in 2Q17.

The number of passengers carried by AAX Indonesia had also increased by more than 100% YoY, from 62,722 in 3Q16 to 152,385 in 3Q17.
