THE Budget 2018 is the “best” annual expenditure ever tabled by the federal government, according to a former finance minister.
Former Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah said the Budget 2018 is a holistic budget, which could restructure the country’s economy to maintain economic resilience.
“The government has been trying to restructure and transform the economy to achieve greater heights and the Budget 2018 is the best budget that has been introduced thus far,” he said in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday, while debating the Supply Bill 2018.
Ahmad Husni served as finance minister between 2009-2016, second to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Razak. He resigned voluntarily on June 27, 2016, in a minor Cabinet shake-up.
Ahmad Husni — who is also Tambun MP — said the budget tabled by Najib last week is evident that the government remains sturdy, despite the geopolitical and global economic uncertainties.
“Among many, reduction in corporate taxes will allow both the public sector and private sector to grow.
“Budget 2018 promises a positive outlook that shows the confidence from the government with its strong focus on the private sector and recognition of the role of small and medium enterprises (SMEs).”
Ahmad Husni highlighted that the measures, which were even extended to micro entrepreneurs, demonstrated the depth of the initiatives in place.
“Despite the yearly focus on SMEs, we are still working to improve the environment for them so they can continue to contribute further to the nation,” he added.
He believes that the government is doing all it could to push the country higher in the global supply chain.
