Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Razak yesterday presented the winner’s trophy to Pat Perez of the US, who aced the 2017 CIMB Classic Golf Championship at TPC Kuala Lumpur in Bukit Kiara, Kuala Lumpur.
Perez, 41, finished with 24-under-par 264, taking home US $1.26 million (RM5.3 million).
Najib was greeted on arrival at the golf course by CIMB Group Holdings Bhd group CEO Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz and other dignitaries.
Tengku Zafrul, in his speech, commended the players for showing great sportsmanship during the four day event, and also praised younger players who showed stellar performance and the ability to compete with the more senior players.
He also said that the CIMB Classic purse, which stood at US$7 million for this year’s edition, would be increased to reflect its status as one of Asia’s finest golf tournaments.
Perez clinched the title with a total score of 24-under-par 264. Compatriot Keegan Brad- ley surged the leaderboard in the final round to become the runner-up after posting 20-under-par 268.
Newly voted 2016-17 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, Xander Schauffele and South Korea’s Kang Sung hoon shared the third placing with identical scores of 17-under-par 271.
Cameron Smith of Australia and Hideki Matsuyama of Japan finished joint fifth with 16-under-par 272.
Malaysia’s Gavin Kyle Green ended the tournament at 288 in 19th position, while compatriot Danny Chia is 289 at No 20.
