Malaysia to boost economic ties with Qatar

Mida to showcase the various investment opportunities that Malaysia has to offer for Qatar

The Qatar-Malaysia Economic Forum today will provide a platform for both countries to explore investment opportunities and potential partnerships.

Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) CEO Datuk Azman Mahmud said the agency is looking forward to create awareness and showcase the various investment opportunities that Malaysia has to offer for Qatar.

Since the foreign delegation will include approximately 70 business representatives, Azman also said the forum will provide a platform for of strategic partnerships.

“The event is timely as Qatar is moving towards being self-sufficient and diversifying away from its traditional investment destinations in the Middle East.

“Malaysia, as a diversified economy with a sizeable multicultural and multilingual talent pool, provides tremendous business opportunities for Qatari investors, especially to access the wider market in the Asean region,” Azman said in a statement last Friday.

“More investments from Qatar are certainly welcomed particularly in the areas of oil and gas, chemicals and chemical products, halal food processing, healthcare services, hotel and tourism, Islamic banking and finance, real estate development and education and training,” he said.

With the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2022 — where Qatar will be the host — Azman also said there are various business opportunities in many areas such as food and beverages, construction and tourism for Malaysian businesses.

Malaysia has enjoyed a long-standing relationship with Qatar, with significant investment from Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund Qatar Investment Authority as the major investor in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur shopping mall and property arms investing in development in and around Kuala Lumpur City Centre.

The Qatar-Malaysia Economic Forum is organised by Mida in collaboration with the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, Malaysia External Trade Development Corp, National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia, the Embassy of the State of Qatar in Malaysia, Ministry of Economy and Commerce Qatar, and Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

It is held in conjunction with the state visit of Sheikh Tamim Hamad Al–Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar to Malaysia.
