Zero waste, zero plastic main focus at Green City forum


The upcoming Selangor Smart City and Future Commerce Convention 2017 is set to explore how smart, digital and green technologies, and future commerce are revolutionising and transforming cities around the globe.

The three-day event features six key experiences in one conference including the Smart City Forum, Future Commerce Forum, Green City Forum, Smart City Exhibition, Smart City Hackathon and the Top E-Commerce Merchant Awards 2017.

The Green City Forum, which will bring green city experts from the United Nations (UN) and the SouthEast Asian region, will discuss the benefits, challenges, pragmatism and potential of building zero waste and zero plastic cities in the business field.

Speakers from Indonesia and the Philippines, together with local waste management experts and environmental entrepreneurs, will share their

thoughts on making businesses green but profitable for local entrepreneurs. UN Centre programme coordinator for regional development Choudhury Rudra Charan Mohanty will be delivering the keynote speech which talks about exploring the pragmatism, challenges and potential of realising efficient and zero waste societies in Malaysia.

There will also be a fireside chat session titled “Green Profit, Green Opportunities” hosted by Selangor’s Tengku Zatashah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah and Rampai Niaga Sdn Bhd (The Body Shop Malaysia) CEO Datin Mina Cheah Foong.

“This session will explore the imminent threats on economies, corporations and even cities, and how their businesses and communities are employing greener growth and sustainability, as well as resilient strategies to mitigate and minimise threats to our future,” Selangor Information Technology and e-Commerce Council (SITEC) said in a recent statement. The forum will also feature regional panellists during the session titled “Breaking Free from Plastic and Building Green Cities”, namely Greeneration Indonesia CEO Muhammad Bijaksana Junerosano and Setia Haruman Sdn Bhd executive chairman Ahmad Khalif Mustapa Kamal.

The city of Barcelona and Selangor have also collaborated and will bring Tesla cars, EV scooters, bike sharing, drones, virtual reality, facial recognition and a self-sustainable green house at the expo. There will also be “Maker Classes” conducted by Arus Academy.

It will showcase 300 exhibition booths and feature 60 top experts and practitioners from over 12 countries in Asia Pacific, Middle East and Europe to share their insights and experiences to a targeted 5,000 attendees.

Apart from that, global tech giants such as Google, Nvidia Corp, Alibaba Group Holding Ltd and Tencent Holdings Ltd will also be at the Future Commerce Forum, which will focus on the future of payments gateways and the impact of the Digital Free Trade Zone on the digital economy, including online marketplaces, logistics and financial technology.

The convention will be held at the Setia City Convention Centre from Sept 7-9, 2017, and is co-organised by Invest Selangor Bhd and Mediaurban of Barcelona, while being co-managed by Menteri Besar Inc (Selangor) and SITEC.
