Deftech’s new HMAV unveiled

DRB-Hicom Defence Technologies Sdn Bhd (Deftech) plans to export its newly unveiled high mobility armoured vehicle (HMAV) 4×4 known as “Lipan Bara”to the regional and Organisation of Islamic Corp (OIC) markets.

Deftech group CEO Lt Kol (K) Datuk Amril Samsudin said the company aims to introduce Lipan Bara into the new markets once it is commissioned by the Malaysian army.

“Lipan Bara has already met the minimum requirement needed by the Malaysian Army. Once the vehicle is commissioned, we will be introducing it to the potential buyers around the region and OIC countries,”he told reporters after  

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Razak officiated the naming of the vehicle at the Defence Services Asia 2016 (DSA 2016) exhibitionand conferenceheld at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Deftech, a wholly owned subsidiary of DRB-Hicom Bhd, was awarded a RM140.98 million contract last year from the Malaysian Army to supply 20 units of the Lipanbara.

Amril said the company plans to deliver the first unit of Lipanbara this May and six more units in November. The remaining 13 units will be delivered  between April and June 2017.

He added that Saudi Arabia is one of the potential markets for Lipanbara and Deftech is currently in talks to market its armoured wheeled vehicle, the AV8 Gempita variant of its Anti Tank Guided Weapon.

Lipanbara, with an engine capacity of up to 300hp, is able to carry a payload weight of up to two tonnes and will be equipped with the M134D-H Gatling Gun 7.62mm from Dillon Aero, Laser Warning and 76mm Grenade Launcher systems.

Amril said Deftech is also collaborating with Chaseri Co Ltd of Thailand under the Asean defence industry initiative to fulfil the HMAV 4×4 requirements by customising it to the Malaysian infantry standards.

He said Malaysia and Thailand share the intellectual property rights to the design on a 50:50 basis.

“The level of protection of the Lipanbara is highly classified, but it adheres to the stringent NATOstandard under the STANAG 4569 protocol,”he added.

Lipanbara and and AV8 arecurrently showcased at the DCA 2016 exhibition and conference which that started yesterday. The exhibition will be on until Thursday, April 21.
